9. Goldfrapp - Seventh Tree
Seventh Tree es el tipo de álbum que no se espera de una banda conocida por temas como "Twist" u "Ooh La La", por suerte. Seventh Tree es más sutil, acústico, relajado e infectado de tonos folk en la suave voz de Alison Goldfrapp, a la que no parece costarle nada explorar nuevos territorios. Cada una de las canciones de este disco hacen que éste sea el trabajo más logrado de Goldfrapp, alejándose del glam de las pistas de baile por un rato para darle paso a lo que aparenta ser una confortante tarde otoñal.

8. Jenny Lewis - Acid Tongue
Sin The Watson Twins en su segundo disco solista, nada era seguro sobre el sonido que podía tener este disco. ¿El resultado? Jenny Lewis mezclando rock, country con algo de Rabbit Fur Coat, alejándose un poco del sonido de Rilo Kiley. El disco cuenta con varios invitados (Elvis Costello, en Carpettbagers, Chris Robinson, Jonathan Rice, Zooey Deschanel y M. Ward como voces de fondo) que sólo agregan enegría a la ya existente en el disco, a través de las letras de Lewis, haciendo de Acid Tongue un disco fácil de escuchar, y de recordar.

7. Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago
Luego de la separación de su novia y de su banda, Justin Vernon se refugió en una cabaña en el bosque de Wisconsin para dar lugar a una serie de lamentos y tristezas que tomaron forma de canciones. Un sonido rústico, sencillo y natural acompañan a esta experiencia catártica, transformándolo en uno de los discos que hay que escuchar este año, esperando que, en algún momento, el aislamiento pueda curar todas las penas.

6. Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend
Vampire Weekend es una de esas bandas en las que te gustaría estar. Su sonido divertido, fresco y juvenil hace que todo parezca fácil. El disco cuenta con perfectas canciones pop no pretenciosas, simples, influenciadas por sonidos africanos que hacen de Vampire Weekend un álbum inmediato, tal vez perfecto para escuchar en el verano, y en otras estaciones.

5. Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
Los Fleet Foxes se las ingeniaron para mezclar un poco de rock clásico con folk sin sonar viejos y/o monónotonos, por el contrario, su disco debut tiene uno de los sonidos más frescos de los últimos años. El disco cuenta con melodías y arreglos intensos pero relajantes, el ambiente montañoso de las canciones se acrecienta en canciones como "Blue Ridge Mountains" o "White Winter Hymnal". Sin duda, un álbum que se convertirá en un clásico, como muchos otros que han salido de Seattle.

4. Deerhunter - Microcastle / Weird Era Cont.
Dejemos las comparaciones con My Bloody Valentine de lado, Deerhunter es una excelente banda. Si bien Cryptograms, su disco anterior, fue difícil de digerir, el proceso con Microcastle es más fácil, aunque no tenga el mismo efecto que su predecesor. Este disco es más "melódico" y quizás más "pop", pero termina siendo un poco más consistente que el anterior. El bonus disc Weird Era Cont. es más psicodélico y desafiante, y bien podría ser un buen disco por sí solo.

3. MGMT - Oracular Spectacular
Para muchos, Oracular Spectacular es uno de esos discos olvidables de una de las bandas "del montón" de la cual no escucharemos nada en los próximos años. Para otros en cambio, es cómo uno de esos discos de una banda relativamente nueva tendría que sonar. Y eso es lo que las separa de las "del montón". Haciendo uso de elementos de psicodelia, electrónica y new wave con letras críticas e irónicas a la vida moderna, Oracular Spectacular cuenta con estribillos brillantes y arreglos que parecen haber sido inspirados por David Bowie. Un disco "espectacular" de una banda de la cual sin duda seguiremos escuchando en los próximos años.

2. Rachael Yamagata - Elephants... Teeth Sinking Into Heart
Elephants...Teeth Sinking Into Heart llega 4 años después del bien recibido debut de Yamagata, Happenstance, que estuvo presente en varias series y películas en años recientes. Durante esos 4 años, Yamagata experimentó la tristeza, la decepción, la muerte de un ser querido y la ruptura con su discográfica y no tuvo miedo de plasmar esas emociones en este disco doble. La primera parte, Elephants, encuentra a Rachael explorando el dolor, en una manera no dolorosa, algo oscura pero madura. Con su particular voz y su infaltable piano, Yamagata expresa a través de canciones lentas, pero no aburridas, su deseo por la otra persona, el anhelo de ser correspondido y los sentimientos que quedan luego de la desilusión. Se destaca "Sunday Afternoon" un tema de 9 minutos de diferentes ambientes que no conoce la noción del tiempo. La segunda parte, Teeth Sinking Into Heart, es más desafiante y saca la PJ Harvey interior en Yamagata en temas como "Faster" o "Sidedish Friend", para terminar con la brillante "Don't" en la que deja en claro: "Don't fuck me in front of me".

1. TV on the Radio - Dear Science
Ambicioso, consistente, pegadizo, inmediato, inteligente. Dear Science es todo eso y más. Luego de Return to Cookie Mountain, la idea de un disco superior era casi improbable. Pero cada momento en Dear Science prueban que estábamos equivocados. Desde "Halfway Home" hasta "Lover's Day", pasando por la infecciosa "Golden Age", Dear Science parecia sonar mejor con cada escucha, convirtiéndolo en uno de los clásicos de esta década.

The Cardigans - Long Gone Before Daylight

That's the name of my blog. And the name of my all-time favorite album. By my favorite band. For real.
The Cardigans are that kind of band that will never make the same record twice, never. Just look at their discography. The happy tunes in Emmerdale and Life surely made some of us jump like kids in the park. First Band On The Moon is happy in a way too, but it's different from its brothers. They were famous for "Lovefool", ooh the 90's. And what about Gran Turismo? Could The Cardigans be any more darker? From "Paralyzed" to the instrumental "Nil", it's pure experimental, kinda Radiohead-ish, and well done.
Then it's Long Gone Before Daylight, recorded in 9 months, after a sort of crisis in the band where the beautiful Nina Persson went from blonde to brunette, and solo for a while making a fantastic album under the name of A Camp. Magnus Sveningsson did the same, he's Righteous Boy. And Peter Svensson worked with Joakim Berg from fellow Swedish band Kent in a side project called Paus.

Now, long gone are the happy tunes from the past. You can tell that they've grown up. Sadness is all over the place, but in a good way, in the most beautiful way that Nina's songwriting could've ever created. 'Cause aside from the acoustic sound and lush production are the lyrics, probably what really made me love this album.
You can find Persson strugling for love in most of the tracks. In "Communication", "Couldn't Care Less", "Please Sister", "Feathers And Down", but she also finds it in "You're The Storm" or the golden track "And Then You Kissed Me". And there's also that voice. Nina's voice is the kind of sound that will take you floating far away from where you are and place you somewhere near you feel like. It's that magical.
From "Communication" to "03:45 No Sleep", including the bonus tracks, this album is the best offering from the band. Its organic sound mixed with American folk and country vibes makes you feel not only comfortable but safe, as weird as that sounds.
The music, the voice, straightforward lyrics, it has it all. Somebody called it a "pop-rock opera, the tale of one heart's tortuous and tortured journey through the mil, and it's superb". And I couldn't agree more. Although is one of the saddest albums I've heard, it's the most beautiful story you could ever hear. And it's worth it.

While waiting for Nina's A Camp second album (which she's recording and should be out next year), here's Long Gone Before Daylight, the US Edition, which came out one year later after its original release date in Europe, with 3 bonus tracks.

Is INDIE not indie anymore?

That's the question, my dear readers.
In the past few months, we've seen lots of indie bands debuting at the top of the Billboard 200 albums charts. Is indie the new mainstream?
The Shins' latest album Wincing the Night Away debuted at number 2, selling over 100,000 copies in the first week. Arcade Fir e's Neon Bible, which was like the most anticipated indie album of the decade, debuted at number 2 as well on March 4th, with sales that exceeded the 92,000 copies. It also debuted at 2 in the UK, and it was number 1 in Canada. Topping the list was We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank by Modest Mouse, with sales of 129,000 copies in the United States. And just last week, the latest release by one of my new favorite bands, Bright Eyes' Cassadaga, has made it to #4.
I'm not saying that it's a bad thing. It's just that those bands weren't the kind of Billboard band. For example. Arcade Fire's Funeral peaked at 131 (shocking, that album is one of the best albums ever made) and the last records by Modest Mouse and The Shins ranked at 19 and 86 respectively. Something's changing here, is everybody loving indie music now?
Anyways, I'll give you a couple of good songs, some of them hasn't been released yet.

Gorgeous Nina Persson has joined the Manic Street Preachers for their upcoming release Send Away The Tigers, due for release on May 7th. She adds her sweet voice in the lead single of the album, Your Love Alone Is Not Enough, and in Autumn Song. The tracks are enjoyable, the lyrics are kinda lame but Nina knows how to make you listen to them, so here you go.

Wilco's Sky Blue Sky is one of those great soft albums I'm really looking forward to own. All of the songs have been streamed in their website and most of them has been leaked (shocking). Sky Blue Sky is set to be released on May 15th.

Cassadaga is just brilliant. It's like the perfect album for a cold winter, to enjoy while drinking hot chocolate or coffee.

Une Nuit Française

Buena noche la de anoche. Yann Tiersen tocó en Harrods, el Meeting Point nocturno del BAFICI (nota mental: debo ver algunas peliculas).
El recital comenzaba a las 10, y como la entrada era libre y gratuita decidí aparecer unas horas antes, asi que yo y compañía llegamos al lugar a las 8 y algo. Lindo ambiente, ya había mucha gente esperando al francés mientras en el escenario Vera Baxter se esforzaba, o no tanto, por no aburrirnos.
La frase "es el de la banda sonora de Amélie" fue probablemente lo más escuchado de la noche. Pero no, él también hizo el soundtrack de Good Bye Lenin!, otra película que recomiendo.
La espera me hacía doler la espalda hasta que monsieur Tiersen apareció en escena junto a su banda. Mi estatura no me permitió verlo mucho, pero nada importaba al escuchar la hermosa melodía que escuchaba. Recorrió su discografía, pasó por Black Session, o el más reciente Les Retrouvailles (discos que todavía no pude conseguir), haciendo de cada canción una brillante explosión instrumental. Guitarra, violín, y acordeón fueron los fuertes de Yann.
Casi 2 horas después el show llegó a su fin, dejandome un muy agradable recuerdo. Pocas veces se puede disfrutar de tan buena música gratuitamente con la tranquilidad con la que lo hice, sin que te empujen tanto como suele suceder en este tipo de eventos en los que no se paga.
"Soy mucho más que el soundtrack de Amélie" definiría, en mi opinión, la noche en la que el francés nos deleitó con un muy buen recital al que, si pudiera, iría 5 veces más.
Este post podría haber estado acompañado de buenas fotos si no me hubiera olvidado de llevar la cámara. En fin, por si no quedó claro, la pasé muy bien anoche a pesar del encuentro frustrado con gente a la que ansiaba conocer.

Leona Naess es una de esas voces de la que es dificil escapar. Nacida y criada en Inglaterra, pero residente de Nueva York, la chica canta bien y escribe lindas canciones.
Actualmente se encuentra trabajando en su cuarto disco, que ya estaba listo pero por un tema de la disquera, decidió "retocarlo" un poco.

22. Magnet - The Tourniquet

Norwegian singer Even Johanssen's second album is a beautiful piece of work. It might not be as brilliant as its successor On Your Side, but it's quite enjoyable as well.

6. Gustavo Cerati - Ahi Vamos

Bob Dylan is Bod Dylan. At this point of my life everything that he does is gonna be great.

4. Thom Yorke - The Eraser

Radiohead's lead singer goes solo? Although it didn't impress me at first, 'cause I didn't find it too different from the Radiohead EP Com Lag (2Plus2IsFive), it grew on me.

3. Incubus - Light Grenades

I think these guys have evolved in a really good way. I really connected to most of the lyrics in the album.

Not really, I'm gonna give you 2 great performances, made with love for sure.
Earlier this year the Polar Music Prize, considered by many to be the music equivalent to the Nobel Prize, was handed out to Led Zeppelin. As part of the ceremony, gorgeous Nina Persson from The Cardigans and some other bands performed their "tributes" to the legendary band. So I leave you now with this powerful yet rockish and feminine performance of their 1969 hit single "Whole Lotta Love" by Mrs. Persson.

The Doors were one of the greatest bands in rock in the late 60's. They still rock my wold tho. Jim Morrison would have turned 63 on December 8th. We miss you Mr. Morrison.

Personal Fest 2006

It was a good day, yesterday.
It began a bit cold, I had to meet some people from college to work on a Radio project (crossed fingers to pass it) and I got home at 4 pm. So I immediately got ready for the event, my friends picked me up and we got there!
First thing we did was to look for bubbles (aka drinks), but we didn't find any. So we went to see some cool DJ Sets. That was quite nice. That ended and we just had to wait for Ian Brow, who was supposed to be up on stage (The Personal Motorola stage) at 8:45. But we got there a bit late, even tho we managed to be close to the stage, yes we did. His performance was good, not as great as I expected it to be, but I enjoyed it anyway. Here's what I got to listen:

-The Sweet Fantastic
-Time Is My Everything (probably my favorite of the night)

-My Star
After that, there was a "surprise". Mr. Brown invited the guitar player of Babasonicos (a disgusting local band) to the stage and played 2 songs from The Stones Roses, fabulous:

Then the lead singer of Babasonicos was on the stage and they played 2 final songs:
-Babasonicos
-F.E.A.R.
Although I really hate Babasonicos, I liked the show, very very much.
Ian left the stage and me and my friends had to run to another stage (the Personal Mania stage), where The Bravery was performing. We got there just in time for An Honest Mistake! Here's some of what they played:

There was another new song, but I don't know the name hehe.
The Robert Smith-ish vocal style and the kinda Elvis lookalike look of lead singer Sam Endicott works perfectly fine, trust me. A great show, a bit short for me. You can listen to the whole debut album of The Bravery here.
We had to run and get back to the Personal Motorola stage again to see New Order. Too many people there!! But again, we got good spots thanks to my friends' "equipments" (if you know what I mean). They opened with Crystal, I was too excited to remember the setlist, sorry, but I do remember these songs:

-Krafty
-Blue Monday
-True Faith
And a Joy Division "cover", Love Will Tear Us Apart. A perfect ending for a perfect journey, don't you think??
The Personal Fest always has some cool bands, hopefully next year they'll get some of my favorite bands as well (The Cardigans maybe?? I wish!).
